The California Gray Whale makes the most spectacular and longest mass migration of any marine mammal. Gray Whales migrate annually along the west coast of North America from the summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to the winter grounds of the Baja California lagoons and back again along the Orange County coast during the months of December, January, February, March, and April. Newport Harbor is located in Newport Beach and only minutes from most of Orange County. Located only 25 minutes from the Anaheim (Disneyland area) with the next closest harbor almost double the travel time, Newport Harbor is the favorite harbor for whale watchers, sailing, and boating enthusiasts. For both the Orange County and greater Los Angeles area, come to the destination of choice for viewing whales, dolphins, seal lions, and all sorts of marine life. The waters surrounding Newport Harbor offer deep nutrient rich waters which draw not only Gray Whales but all types of dolphin, seals, fish, and numerous other marine creatures. The underwater Newport Canyon running very close to shore brings nutrient rich waters incredibly close and as a result Gray whales are often seen just outside the harbor entrance. Whale sightings are a luxury that can be offered because of the abundant sea life that is attracted to these waters. The Laguna Beach coastline is just south of Newport Harbor and offers some of the most beautiful coastline of Southern California. The gray whales seem to enjoy the beauty of the coastline as well. Most whale watching cruises take in the scenic backdrops of Laguna Beach while viewing the gentle giants just a few hundred yards from shore. Due to the geography of the Orange County coastline, surrounding Newport Harbor, the ocean conditions are comparable to a fresh water lake with very calm/flat seas, which allows whale watchers to fully enjoy the amazing migration.
